Nathaniel, the fourth child of Phineas and Mahala, is listed under the Nathaniel and Julia Banning family history.

David, the sixth child of Phineas and Mahala, is listed under the David and Emma Banning family.

Richard, the ninth child of Phineas and Mahala, was born 15 June 1857 at Ossian. He married Bertha H. Hokenson 1 Nov 1886. Their children are: Albert F., Charles William and one adopted daughter. Richard died 11 Feb 1906 in East Sioux Falls, SD and Bertha died 15 Jan 1956 in Rowena, SD. Both are buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Sioux Falls.

Albert F., the first child of Richard and Bertha, was born 23 Jul 1887 at East Sioux Falls. He married Maime L. Johnson 13 Feb 1911 in Sioux Falls. Their one child, Virginia Alberta, was born 10 Apr 1912. Albert died 24 Jul 1952 and Maime died 4 Feb 1966. Vi, ginia died 12 Feb 1923. All three were buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Charles William, the second child of Richard and Bertha, was born 4 Jan 1892. He married Mae Etta Fish 28 Dec 1916 in Sioux Falls. Their children are: Richard Franklin, Madeline E. and Mavis Lorraine. Charles died 26 Jan 1976 and Mae died 10 Apr 1988. Both are buried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

Phineas and Mahala came to Winneshiek Co. in June 1849. The first co-operative creamery was opened on their farm. They donated the land for the Greenwood Centennial Cemetery. They belonged to the Centennial Church near Ossian. Mahala used to ride around on her horse to collect funds for the church.

Phineas died 10 Apr 1893 and Mahala died 30 Oct 1892. Both died in Ossian and are buried at the Centennial Cemetery near Ossian.

Barloon, John and Anna (Adams)

John and Anna Barloon, newly married, set sail from Hamburg, Germany in the year 1851. They were born and married in Bohemia. John was the son of Jakub and Marie Zak Baloun. The name was changed from “Baloun" to “Barloon" sometime after their arrival in Iowa. The children of John and Anna still use the name “Baloun” on their baptism records. John was a brother to Anna Baloun Andera, wife of Frantisek Andera whose granddaughter Marie was the mother of the famous Spillville woodcarvers, Joseph and Frank Bily.

The trip across the Atlantic took 6 weeks. They landed in Quebec, Canada and settled on a small fruit farm near Hamilton, Canada. Their first born, Joseph was born at sea. While living in Canada they learned the English language and made lasting friends with their French neighbors. Anna had 2 sisters who left Canada to settle in Iowa and it was at their urging that John and Anna came to Iowa in 1865. They first settled in what was then known as the John Hurley neighborhood, 2 miles from Festina, IA and 5 miles from Ft. Atkinson. They then moved to a new home 4 miles west of Spillville. In 1871 John and

Anna bought a farm 3 miles west of Ft. Atkinson which remained in the family. It was last owned by the Adolph Barloon family. John was a shoemaker in Bohemia and continued in that trade in Iowa. They had 8 children: Joseph married Anna Hanosh and farmed near Little Turkey, IA; Elizabeth married Edward Tuck and moved to the Enid, OK area; William married Minnie Ryan; Frank Barloon married Eleanor Novotny, they farmed near Ft. Atkinson; Thomas married Anna Kortan, they moved to the Dakotas and then returned to farm in Winneshiek Co.; Cecelia married John Schneiberger and moved to Oklahoma; Mary married Vincent Shindelar and lived in Aberdeen, SD; Martha married Barney Sloan and lived in the Lawler, IA area. John died 15 Aug 1881 and Anna died 19 Jan 1894.

Barloon, William James and Mary Minnie (Ryan)

William J. Barloon was born to John and Anna (Adams) Barloon 5 Sep 1875. He was baptized 3 Oct 1875 by Rev. Mikota at St. Wenceslaus Church, Spillville, IA. His sponsors were Felix and Mary Anna Ruzicka. He was raised in Winneshiek Co. and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA. He received his first Teacher’s Certificate on 15 Apr 1894. His first teaching assignment was a school in District No. 7. Returning to college, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree on 14 Jun 1899. While in college he married Mary Minnie Ryan of Carroll, IA, daughter of James and Nora Ryan. William was elected Principal of the Ossian Public Schools in 1899. In 1908 he helped organize the Farmers and Merchants Bank at Armour, SD. He worked as a cashier at the bank until 1915 and then returned to Carroll, IA. He traveled as a representative of Highland Park College, Des Moines, IA. Later he purchased the Abstract Office and a home in Carroll where he lived until his death. William and Minnie had 4 children: Wilbur, John, James and Anne. William Barloon wrote and published a book titled, Be Thou Faithful, an autobiography. After reading this book we can say that William Barloon was a scholar and had strong religious convictions upon which he based his life.

Barnes, Lester and Ella (Naab)

Lester Earl Barnes was born 19 Oct 1902 the son of Rupert R. and Luna (Benson) Barnes. Rupert and Luna had 2 children who were born and died in Germany. After immigrating to the United States from Germany they had 10 more children. Lester’s brothers and sisters were: Hattie (m. Brokken), Claude, Glenn, Mildred (m. Oleson-Delegardelle), Alta (m. Daman) and Edna (m. Steen).

Lester married Ella Elizabeth Naab 29 Apr 1929 in the Methodist Parsonage at Cresco, IA. Ella was born 24 Sep 1904 in South Dakota, the daughter of Ann Elizabeth Hamilton and Fredrick Naab. Ann was born in western Iowa, near Sibley, and Fredrick was born in Illinois. “Fred” was born 1863 and died 2 Feb 1942 on a farm south of
